The Crucible Timed Essay Test Questions and Directions
Directions: Choose one of the following prompts. Label your essay with the prompt of your choice, ie: Prompt 3. You will write a short essay (at least 1 page) in response. Use text evidence (quotes) to support your claim. With each quote, provide the line number. We have approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete this exam. I suggest that you spend the first 5 minutes deciding your essay topic based upon how well you think you can support it. Spend the next 15 minutes outlining your essay—write your thesis statement and lay out the main points for each body paragraph (Basically you should brainstorm what you want to say and write quick notes in the order you want to say it). DO NOT TRY TO WRITE IN COMPLETE SENTENCES ON YOUR OUTLINE. THIS WILL WASTE YOUR TIME. I would then spend 10-15 minutes looking for the quotes you want to use. To getting full marks, your essay should have at least one quote for each “reason” in your thesis. Spend the remaining 50-45 minutes actually writing your essay. For this portion make sure you’re using complete sentences, and correct capitalization and punctuation. For reference a quote looks like this:
This idea is proven in the text as Miller writes, “Words word words words,” (line 21).
As with everything I ask of you, your effort is incredibly important. I cannot give points for a returned test with no words, but I can give some for anything. The expectation is about 450 words. I understand this may seem like a lot but I kow you are capable. If you absolutely do not know, do your best. (Do your best either way) Additionally, if you think you know a quote you want to use, but can’t remember the act, ask me and I may be able to point you in the right direction.
