Mrs. Shields
The Principles of Health Science course is designed to provide an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry.
To pursue a career in the health science industry, students should learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students should recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others.
Expectations:
- Students will arrive on time, every class day, prepared to engage in learning and class interactions.
- Students are expected to respect the instructor, classmates and themselves.
- Students will be expected to handle all class equipment with care. We will be hands on in using many tools in the medical industry.
- Students are expected to handle themselves professionally. This includes conversation, dress and actions.

- Pens or pencils
- A Spiral Notebook or Composition Book
- Chromebook/Computer
Grading: Grades will fall into one of two categories: Major Grade (Exams) and Minor Grades (homework, quizzes, daily discussions and activities).
Corrections/Retest: Students who earn a failing grade on a test or assignment may have the opportunity to retake or correct that test/assignment. Students retaking a test must arrange a time during tutorials retake the test. . A student will have up to 3 school days to correct the assignment and/or retake test.
Late Work: An assignment is considered late when a student is NOT absent on the due date of an assignment but fails to turn in the assignment on the due date. The following guidelines will be invoked when a student turns in a late assignment.
- A student cannot correct late work for an enhanced grade.
- Late work will only be accepted up to 3 days after the assignment was initially due.
- If an assignment is not turned in after the 3 rd day, this will be considered a student discipline concern and will be handled as such.
- Each day an assignment is late, ten points will be deducted from the overall grade.
Day 1 Late – Highest grade a student can earn is 90%.
Day 2 Late - Highest grade a student can earn is 80%.
Day 3 Late - Highest grade a student can earn is 70%.
Student Absence: Students who are absent from school will be given adequate me to complete the missing work. If students are aware of their absence in advance, they are encouraged to get the work from his/her teacher in advance of the absence. Students will be given a minimum of the number of days absent plus one to make up work missed. The teacher has the discretion to allow more days depending on circumstances. Under this sec on a student who was absent three days will be given a minimum of four days to turn in the make-up work. The type of absence will not factor in to this.
CLASSROOM RULES
- Integrity first, be considerate of other students, and always strive for excellence.
- Please do not leave until dismissed by the instructor. Do not pack up early. Do not line up by the door.
- Leave your workspace clean and neat. Dispose of all trash in the proper receptacle. All messes left behind will reflect negatively on the student’s class participation grade.
- Silence phones during class. Phones will be placed in a phone holder as students enter the room each day.
- Our classroom is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that belongs to the district. Any student who purposely misuses any device or equipment will be subject to disciplinary action. During the course of the semester, we will have opportunities to use multiple tools used in the medical field. Stethoscopes, Blood Pressure Cuffs, and thermometers are just a few of the tools we have the opportunity to practice skills with. These tools are property of MISD, and will be treated and handled with the utmost respect.
- All rules in the Millsap Student Handbook will be enforced, so become familiar with the school rules.
LAB RULES
- Snacks and water are fine in class, but NEVER during/in lab when tools are out. Please pick up after yourself or this privilege will be revoked.
- Labs are designed to be interesting, thought-provoking, and fun, however, lab is NEVER the place for horseplay and it will not be tolerated. Students who are reckless in the lab will receive an automatic zero for that lab.
- Follow all safety rules, instructions, and teacher directives carefully. Pay careful attention to your work.
- Leave your equipment and lab station clean and neat. Messy lab stations and dirty equipment will reflect poorly on your grade for that lab and your class participation grade.
- Wear safe, appropriate attire on lab days. You will not participate in lab if you are not properly dressed.
- All missed labs will need to be made up promptly. Make-up labs should be scheduled ASAP by the student.
In closing… I can’t tell you how excited I am to have the opportunity to be a part of your education. I strive to do my very best to bring the skills that I have learned within the healthcare setting into the classroom. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a great year with you!
