Course Description:
Law Enforcement is an introduction to the inner workings of Law Enforcement. This course will give students an overview of Professional Standards, Ethics and the U.S. Legal System, Communication Skills, Use of Force, Agencies of Law, Enforcement, Accident Investigations, Procedural and Substantive Criminal Law, Custody and Interrogation, Victims, Witnesses, and Juveniles, Family Violence, Drugs and Alcohol, Community-Oriented Police Programs, Reports and Crime Scenes, Vehicle Stops, Tactical Entries, we will study the Bill of Rights, learn the Miranda Rights, and the Corrections side of Law Enforcement, and look at the Texas Penal Code.
During the year, an emphasis will be placed on developing writing, reading, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students will learn the value of honesty and integrity as it relates to working in law enforcement.
During the year, students will interact with law enforcement personnel, lawyers, and the court system and will be able to learn from their experiences. Audio, video, and slide presentations will be used to expose the students to the realities of the law enforcement profession.
Course Goals:
-Acquire and understand basic law enforcement.
-Improve basic reading, writing, and interpersonal communication skills.
-Develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
-Learn and understand basic report writing skills.
-Exposure to careers in the criminal justice system through presentations by criminal justice professionals.
Class Room Conduct:
When arriving in the classroom ALL CELL PHONES WILL BE PUT IN THE CELL PHONE HOLDER THAT IS PROVIDED IN THE CLASSROOM. YOUR PHONE WILL BE PUT ON AIRPLANE MODE.
Be ready to work and take notes.
YOU will be responsible for looking at notes in Canvas if you do not take notes in class. The power points will be posted on canvas.
Listen to instructions the first time they are given. In law enforcement time management and attention to detail are important.
NO USE OF PROFANITY PERIOD.
Be prepared, Be engaged, Be attentive, Be excited, We learn by doing.
Discipline:
1st Offense: Verbal Warning
2nd Offense: Call parent and teacher detention
3rd Offense: Call parent and school detention
4th Offense: Send to Office
Assignments and Credit:
Class Assignments:
-Most assigned work will be completed in class. All assignments will be completed neatly and will be typed or handwritten (neatly). All projects, term papers, and special topic reports will be typed, and single-spaced with a title page, narrative, and reference page.
If a student is absent, it is the student's responsibility to receive any work he/she may have missed. It is a good idea for students to have a classmate's phone number and/or email address that can help keep them up to date on assignments they have missed. If you have any questions email me and I will help you. If you are in sports or other school-related activities all assignments will still be due on the due date. If it is due on the day you have to leave and not make it to my class, please turn it in.
Extra Credit:
Extra credit will be given and it is not offered to just make up for poor performance in class. Extra credit assignments will be 10 points added at the discretion of the teacher.
Quizzes and Tests:
Quizzes will consist of multiple-choice and/or true/false. There will be vocabulary word quizzes throughout the year and also will cover the end of a section. Tests will be announced and a review given. They will consist of multiple choice and short answer questions.
Writing Assignments:
Law Enforcement requires a great deal of reading and writing. The student will learn to write police reports. These reports have to be clear and concise and complete.
Students will be doing reports on certain topics throughout the year.
Grading Policy:
Each assignment will be graded on the standard points.
100-90 =A
89-80 =B
79-70 = C
69-60= D
59 below = F
Grades will be put in as students complete the assignment.
An assignment is considered late when you are NOT absent on the due date of the assignment but fail to turn in the assignment on the due date. The following guidelines will be invoked when a student turns in a late assignment.
-Student cannot correct late work for an enhanced grade.
-Late work will only be accepted up to 3 days after the assignment was initially due.
-Each day an assignment is late, ten points will be deducted from the overall grade.
-Day 1 Late- Highest grade a student can earn is a 90.
-Day 2 Late- Highest grade a student can earn is an 80.
-Day 3 Late- Highest grade a student can earn is a 70.
If the assignment is 3 days late from the date it was given, and you are not absent, then on the 4th day it will be zero and it will stay a zero.
If you are absent you are responsible for retrieving the work you have missed.
